No mountain too high; Rio Ferdinand Foundation hosts youth training in Donegal
A newly formed Youth Advisory Group, comprising 19 young leaders from diverse regions including Belfast, Derry, Sligo, Enniskillen, Omagh, and Louth, gathered on Wednesday, 2nd July, at the X Community Centre in Donegal. The young people, all aged 14-18, engaged in discussions on community leadership, employability, and social mobility —crucial topics at the heart of the programme's mission.
The Youth Advisory Group is a driving force in the development of the Beyond the Ball programme. It is crucial to the evolution of this community engagement programme, funded by the International Fund for Ireland's Communities in Partnership programme.
Delivered by the Rio Ferdinand Foundation, the overnight residential provided an opportunity for young people from border counties to come together and discuss their hopes for peacebuilding and cross-community reconciliation. These young people represent diverse countries and communities, some of which face significant economic and social challenges.
The group stayed overnight at Derrylahn Youth Hostel before taking on Slieve League on Thursday morning, working together to conquer the self-named mountain of stone pillars, putting into practice teamwork skills they have developed through participation in weekly education and training sessions.
The Beyond the Ball programme, launched in 2023, has already made a significant impact. Since its inception, nearly 1000 young people have participated in the programme, with over half completing accredited training courses and qualifications. These skills empower them to create change within their community, inspiring hope for a brighter future.
Next month, the youth advisory group will reunite at Sullivan & Lambe Park, Drogheda, to host a cross-border, cross-community tournament as part of their social action project. This exciting event promises to further engage and unite the community.
